Literacy Volunteers of Putnam County (LVPC) serves anyone sixteen years of age or older who wants help. Our services are free, thanks to our financial supporters and volunteer tutors, and completely confidential.

What we do for students:

  • We assess each student's literacy or math level.
  • We match them with trained tutors, one-on-one .
  • Then we help students with reading, math, homework, working towards a GED, or speaking English.

What we do for volunteer tutors:

  • We offer a fulfilling experience that can change the life of another person.
  • We train volunteers to tutor in reading, math, or English as a Second Language (ESL), and give them material support.
  • Click here for details on volunteering you do not have to have a degree in education to tutor.

If you know someone who has difficulty with reading, math, learning English as a Second Language, or if you would like to volunteer as a tutor, please call us at 304-757-1550, or email us at

Literacy Volunteers of Putnam County is housed at St. Timothy's in-the-Valley Episcopal Church, Hurricane, which donates space to our organization. We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit affiliated with state and national organizations, Literacy West Virginia and ProLiteracy of America.
